Formal dining happens in The Dining Room, located at the back of the ship on decks 2 and 3 (on the Koningsdam). This is your traditional cruise dining experience with many tables and a menu that changes daily with a few regular items remaining each day.

Cruisetour Feature Comparisons
Your first stop in the Yukon territory is Dawson City, the epicenter of the Klondike Gold Rush. Dawson City has maintained its 1890s facades to appeal to tourists and, paired with its unpaved streets, it's truly appealing to young people who are drawn to work in its shops, bars and cafes. There's a definite "hipster miner" vibe, which makes the two nights you'll spend there stand out from the rest. This tour is several hours long and is on a school bus, so be prepared for a long, bumpy ride. The bus tour guide -- who is also the driver -- will make several stops for better animal viewing, but unfortunately only about three bathroom stops. The Alaska Railroad between Anchorage and Denali is billed as the most scenic way to make the trip, in domed train cars that feature special viewing platforms.
I was most impressed with the amount of lounge seating around the ship. One of my favorite things to do on cruises is read in a comfy chair with a good view. Thank you, Holland America for inviting me as your guest to check out one of your famous Alaska cruises. All thoughts and opinions written here are based on my personal cruise experience.
Night Alaska Inside PassageDetails
The last day of the land portion of our cruisetour involved another train, the White Pass & Yukon Route railway, a narrow-gauge railroad built in 1898 to get wannabe miners up to the gold fields. It's truly an engineering marvel, and the views along the sheer cliffs, where waterfalls spill over, are genuinely jaw-dropping. Make sure that your cruisetour package includes a reservation on the Tundra Wilderness Tour, the park-sponsored bus that takes you 53 miles into Denali's lands. This might be your best bet to see wildlife throughout your trip.
Travel Is Our Tradition
Or go to the Glacier Brewhouse and dive into your first (but certainly not last) salmon meal of the trip. Conveniently located an hour and a half from Anchorage, Whittier is a small town on the shore of the glacier-filled Prince William Sound. Ketchikan, Alaska is one of the best spots along Alaska's Inside Passage to explore the rich cultural sights of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian.
There are 15 itineraries to choose from, with each one from ranging from nine to 18 days. It's hard to go wrong when you combine a great itinerary with one of your favourite ships. Noordam and Volendam are both part of the Alaska Land+Sea program, so you can take your pick.
Accompanied by wildlife experts and National Park Service Rangers, it explores the ecology, wildlife and gold rush history of Denali National Park. A complimentary Denali Natural History Tour is included for all guest on one-night park stays. Learn about the heritage and culture from indigenous Huna Tlingit guides and on fascinating shore excursions. The adventure continues with Alaska land and sea cruisetour packages, including accommodation and tours not offered by any other cruise line. Start your journey in Anchorage followed by three days spotting wildlife such as moose, wolves, and grizzly bears at Denali National Park. Explore Fairbanks, Alaska's second-largest city, and historic Dawson and Whitehorse before boarding the ship to explore Alaska's highlights by sea.
The cruise takes you through the Inside Passage, allowing you to see firsthand the stunning waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and pristine waterways that make this state so unique. On the way back, you’ll also have the chance to see wildlife in their natural habitat, including whales, bald eagles, and sea otters. In addition, the city is home to a variety of cultural attractions, including the Totem Heritage Center and the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center. And, of course, no visit to Ketchikan would be complete without taking a fishing charter or enjoying some of the fresh seafood.
Alaska is a popular destination for tours and cruises, and for good reason! You’ll find several national parks and landmarks which offer scenic views of mountains, glaciers, and forests, as well as the opportunity to see wildlife in their natural habitat. Of course, it is not just the landscape that makes Alaska worth visiting.
Holland America’s chefs will prepare and serve it in a true ocean-to-table experience.
